It serves as an ideal base for hiking Scafell Pike, Great Gable, Castle Crag, and other popular Wainwrights, with trails accessible directly from the site. The campsite maintains a peaceful, back-to-nature atmosphere, encouraging relaxation away from daily distractions. Guests can choose their own pitch in a well-maintained meadow, with options near the river or under trees. The site is easy to find and offers a wonderfully secluded atmosphere. A highlight is the Saturday night wood-fired pizza barn at the farm, serving delicious homemade pizzas that foster a great social atmosphere. The on-site farm shop sells essentials, cakes, local produce, and firewood, though opening hours can be limited. The local pub, the Yew Tree Inn, is within easy walking distance and offers excellent food, a riverside beer garden, and free Wi-Fi. Wild swimming is possible in the crystal-clear river right next to the campsite. The owners, Daniel and Ruby, are consistently praised for being extremely friendly, welcoming, and helpful, often coming around in the evening to check on guests. The setting is perfect for stargazing on clear nights. Mobile phone signal is generally absent on the pitches, which most guests appreciate as a digital detox. The toilets are consistently clean and adequate, though lighting in the block was occasionally poor. Hot showers are appreciated for their strong pressure and cleanliness, but they are located a short five- to seven-minute walk from the pitches and close at 8 pm. A drawback is the lack of hot water at the washing-up sinks and toilet hand basins, requiring campers to boil their own water. Some pitches can be uneven or boggy after rain, and lower areas may flood. Midges can be abundant near the river, so insect repellent is essential. During peak times, the limited number of toilets can cause queues. The site has no electric hookups, embracing a back-to-basics ethos focused on natural beauty and simplicity.
