Nestled on a working farm with sweeping views of Blencathra and the surrounding fells, Gill Head Farm offers a memorable base for exploring Keswick, Ullswater, and the northern Lake District. The campsite's working farm setting adds rustic charm, with peacocks, hens, cows, lambs, and resident red squirrels freely roaming the grounds, delighting families and nature lovers. Guests consistently praise the immaculately clean facilities, particularly the modern shower and toilet blocks with hot, powerful showers. A standout communal room equipped with sofas, a TV, microwave, toaster, kettle, fridge, and freezer provides a welcoming hub for relaxing or escaping the weather. Spacious pitches—from hardstanding for campervans to meadow and riverside tent spots—are generally flat and well-maintained, though some become muddy after heavy rain. Families love the children's playground, the safe environment where kids can roam freely, and the farm animals; dogs are welcome, with access to river swims and a designated walking area. A unique highlight is the private natural plunge pool and waterfall on the grounds, perfect for a refreshing dip. The on-site shop sells essentials, firewood, and fresh local produce, and a popular pizza van visits on Fridays. Staff are repeatedly commended for their friendliness, helpfulness, and local knowledge, often going above and beyond for guests. The location boasts easy access from the M6 and A66, with a local pub within walking distance and countless walking routes starting from the site. The peaceful atmosphere is generally respected with quiet hours after 10pm, but the proximity to the A66 means road noise is a recurring drawback, especially in the top field. Mobile phone signal is poor or negligible across the site, and free WiFi is available only near the communal room, where it can be unreliable. Some guests note that pitches in the riverside and top fields can be uneven or sloping, and occasional cleanliness lapses in toilet blocks occur during busy periods. The electric hookup system requires campers to locate their own post, and parking can be tight for some pitches. Despite these minor issues, the overwhelming majority of visitors would return, citing the exceptional scenery, warm hospitality, superb facilities, and family-friendly charm as reasons for their loyalty.
