Camping Communal de Chimay
This campsite enjoys a fantastic location right in the heart of Chimay, within walking distance of the town's shops, restaurants, and the famous abbey where Trappist beer is brewed. The adjacent Ravel cycle paths make it an ideal base for exploring the region by bike, and the local cheese and other products are well worth trying. However, the camping experience is seriously marred by neglected facilities and a lack of maintenance. The sanitary block is widely criticized as outdated, poorly maintained, and unhygienic, with too few showers for women, off-putting shower curtains, and sinks that lack privacy dividers. Pitches are spacious and many are beautiful, but the site is cluttered with long-unused, neglected caravans and debris that detract from the overall atmosphere. The ground is unhardened and quite sloped, making leveling a challenge for some campers. Staff at reception are described as cool and efficient by some, but others have encountered unfriendliness, with one group of cyclists being turned away at the end of a hot day, leading to frustration. A kind camper reportedly allowed those rejected visitors to stay on their own patch, highlighting guests' generosity in contrast to staff attitude. Electrical hookups provide 16 amps, and water points are conveniently nearby. There is no playground for children, which is disappointing for a three-star campsite. Waste disposal facilities include a grey water point for camper vans and chemical toilet disposal on site. While the location is superb for exploring Chimay and sampling its local products, the neglected state of the pitches and the poor condition of the sanitary facilities are major drawbacks that significantly affect the overall experience. Travelers should weigh the beautiful surroundings against the disappointing upkeep when planning their stay.
